12 Truths About Getting Out Of Debt

In the last year, 3 new giant storage unit complexes have been built in our neighborhood. To me, that means 2 things. The American consumer is buying shit they can’t fit into their own house and consumer debt in America is swelling.

At some point though, you have to say, “enough is enough.” Can I get a show of hands for all the people tired of interest and finance charges on debt?

My current number is 616. Yep, $616 dollars is the monthly figure I spend to finance our debt for our mortgage. It wasn’t always that way. Less than 5 years ago I was paying nearly $1,500 a month in interest charges to a car loan, student loans, and our mortgage.

It took a mindset shift and a realization that there was a better way to live than in debt. That is why I love this article, 12 Truths About Getting Out Of Debt, by Jackie Beck.

Number 10 is my favorite. Read the article→

How many families have an extra freezer in the garage or basement? A better question, when is the last time you cleaned out your freezer?

You may be sitting on a pot of gold you didn’t even know was there.

I don’t even need to look, but I know I have a couple of roasts, a turkey, and some salmon, among other unknown treasures. Hidden in the recesses of the ice-encrusted meatsicles, lies at least a couple weeks of dinners.

The blog, Daily Cup Of Fire, shares their story of a freezer emergency, why food waste sucks and their very creative solution. This article inspired me to come up with a freezer meal plan in April and track how much it saves me in grocery spending. Read the article→

5 Simple Ways To Pay Off Your Mortgage Faster

Riley | Young and the InvestedThe last big obstacle on our path to financial freedom is our mortgage debt. I diligently make extra payments every month, yet I still feel like they barely move the needle.

In spite of that discouraging feeling, I still plug away every month. In the past couple of years, I have focused on carving out some money from our monthly budget to attack our mortgage balance.

We are now in the position where our principal payments are nearly 3x our monthly interest charge. The snowball is gaining speed!

Even though we have made progress, I am a sucker for reading any and all blog posts I come across with the topic of paying off your mortgage early.

This article by The Young And The Invested, walks us through 5 sure fire ways to pay off your mortgage faster. Number 5 is the method I am currently using to get across the finish line. Read the article→
